Graphic Designer Role (Built Environment)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Glasgow or Edinburgh office as a Graphic Designer. We are looking for a creative, technically minded and proactive Graphic Designer to work alongside our Associate Graphic Designer, supporting our clients, and colleagues across a diverse range of projects.

At MLA, you’ll become part of a collaborative team of architects, interior designers and consultants who believe that thoughtful design has the power to transform how people think, feel and behave within a space.

This is an engaging prospect for someone who enjoys combining creativity with practical problem-solving. The role will span everything from creating graphic artwork, signage and wayfinding strategies for client projects in workplace, hospitality, residential and commercial environments, to developing visual identities, marketing collateral and bid documents for internal purposes.

As the role develops, you’ll have the opportunity to shape and strengthen MLA’s visual identity, develop graphic standards across the practice, and become a key part of our design process from concept through to delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with architects, interior designers and consultants to communicate complex ideas clearly through graphics.
  • Produce signage and wayfinding strategies that enhance user experience and reinforce client brands.
  • Engage with client brand and design guides to explore how these might manifest into physical and digital signage/graphic solutions.
  • Research client brands and project narratives to develop graphics with a clear purpose and story.
  • Produce graphics for client project reports, feasibility studies and presentations.
  • Prepare artwork and technical information suitable for print and digital production.
  • Maintain and develop MLA’s own brand identity and graphic standards.
  • Support the preparation of high-quality bid documents, presentations and marketing material.
  • Amend and or create consistent templates, document layouts and presentation material across the practice.
  • Assist with MLA website content, social media graphics and wider marketing initiatives.
  • Engage with the team in exploring new ways of visually communicating information they wish to convey in a style consistent with MLA brand.
  • Help improve the quality and consistency of visual communication generally throughout the practice.

Skills and Qualifications

We’re looking for someone who combines creative thinking with strong technical ability.

Essential:

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Graphic Design or Visual Communication.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating both creative and technical design work.
  • Excellent Adobe Creative Suite skills, particularly InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop.
  • Excellent understanding of typography, layout and visual hierarchy.
  • Experience producing artwork for both digital and print.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary design team.
  • Curious, enthusiastic and willing to research projects to understand the purpose behind the design.

Desirable:

  • Experience working within architecture, interior design or the built environment.
  • Experience designing signage and wayfinding systems.
  • Experience generating simple icons or symbol graphics.
  • Experience creating simple data driven infographics.
  • Knowledge of environmental graphics.
  • Basic understanding of AutoCAD and/or Revit and utilising  these outputs graphically.
  • Motion graphics or video editing experience.
  • Photography or image editing skills.
  • Experience with website graphics or digital marketing.
