Smart Working Principles

Designed with the client’s future smart working principles, flexibility for changing requirements is a core part of the design. The central, supportive hub serves as a consistent anchor, ensuring continuity in the space and retaining essential facilities. But providing sufficient desks, meeting rooms and collaboration space for the longer term, supports the business as it grows. The strategic approach promotes adaptability and enhances the overall functionality and longevity of the workspace.

“We are very proud of our new Leeds office and its standout quality finish that supports an outstanding experience for our clients and colleagues alike in the heart of the city. The project was a continuation of our alliance with MLA and ensured our values of personal, partnership and performance were central to both our delivery approach and design. Thank you to the MLA team for working with us and our wider stakeholders to deliver a great new space. "

- Scott Walker, Senior Project Manager

Design for Wellbeing

Incorporating biophilic design and ‘natural analogues’ facilitate a feeling of wellbeing. Using finishes, textures, colours, and organic shapes connects occupants to the natural world. The positive associations as well as the improved aesthetic create a more comfortable space to inhabit.

The concept of incorporating sweeping curves in the design was a departure from the usual straight lines and rigid structures. Introducing a natural and organic feel, the tactile curved elements are seamless and smooth.

Planting throughout the space creates a calming atmosphere, lowering stress and improving mood. Sea blues and landscape green were introduced with tiling and wallcoverings. Soft fabrics add a luxurious and sophisticated feel, and warm tones enhance the calm and comfortable environment.

Inclusive Design

Ensuring the workspace worked for all, the design promotes inclusivity and accessibility. A multi-faith room, first aid and mothering room were provided for the use of colleagues. And height adjustable desking and an accessible tea-point and reception (including Loop) support a more accessible space.

Quiet, focus spaces provide low sensory areas for those requiring a less stimulating environment. Offering a variety of spaces with varying sensory thresholds recognises the diverse needs of colleagues and provides workspace options for different tasks.

Specification

Maintaining a consistent high standard throughout, finishes and materials were specified for a high-end look and feel and also for longevity. Special consideration was given to heavily trafficked areas with robust and easily maintained materials such as high-quality timber effect vinyl and rubber flooring.

A Sense of Place

Building on the design for their London office, our team worked on a design guide for brand consistency across the client’s estate. Each office has its own identity reflecting its location but there is a strong brand message of a professional, forward-looking business.
Local artwork, products and furniture manufacturers were given priority for Leeds. This included a local wallcovering designer and locally manufactured fabric and furniture e.g. NaughtOne furniture and Camira fabrics.

The Yorkshire Rose etched onto the reception desk and the Leeds skyline artwork create a sense of place. Earthy tones reflecting the city’s brickwork and the area surrounding the canal are paired with the brand colours to add a bit of ‘punch’.

With attention to detail a priority, the result is a consistent brand identity but with a local personality.
